Nokia’s G22 takes repairing seriously, with a recycled plastic back and repair kits sold in partnership with iFixit. It also promises two years of Android upgrades and monthly security updates. It uses an octa-core Unisoc processor and offers a near-stock Android experience. A 50-megapixel rear camera and a 6.5-inch display are some of its highlights.
Nokia G22 Release Date
The Nokia G22 is a budget phone with a difference. It’s the Finnish brand’s first smartphone designed with reparability in mind, and aims to make it easy for you to replace a flat battery, broken screen or bent charging port yourself by partnering with repair specialists iFixit, who have created comprehensive guides and replacement parts that will be available to everyone at affordable prices. Nokia G22 will be released on 8th October 2023
It uses a Unisoc T606 chip which is slow by modern standards, but it’s snappy enough to get apps open and running quickly, although I did experience some lag when scrolling quickly through pages on Chrome and some delay in loading heavy social media apps. The camera is decent too, with a 50Mp main sensor, a 2Mp depth camera and an AI enhancing mode that works well in bright daylight. The phone runs on pure Android 12 with no bloatware or pre-installed third-party apps. It promises to receive two years of OS updates and monthly security patches.
Nokia G22 Price
The Nokia G22 is a budget Android phone that’s built to last. It’s a phone that you can repair yourself using simple tools and guides, thanks to HMD Global’s partnership with iFixit. The G22 has a large, but primitive 6.5-inch 720p LCD display. It’s fine in most situations, but it lacks the pristine appearance that you get with a 1080p screen. It’s powered by an octa-core Unisoc T606 processor, and it comes with 4GB of RAM. It also has 64GB of storage, which is more than you’ll find on many flagship phones.

It has a triple-camera setup that includes a 50MP wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. The camera performs well, but it could use a bit more punch in low light. The Nokia G22 is a phone that takes sustainability seriously, with a reusable back, recycled plastic components, and tools that you can use to repair it yourself. It also promises two years of Android OS upgrades and three years of security updates.

The 6.5-inch 720p screen has a 90Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It’s capable of playing demanding games such as Ark Survival Evolved at medium settings, though graphics are a little slideshow-like on maxed out settings. The phone is slow in general use and feels dated. The primary 50MP sensor can capture some fine detail but it isn’t great for photos. The in-house night mode is also soft and lacklustre. Video is a bit rubbish too with maximum recording being 1080p at 30fps and no stabilisation.
Nokia G22 Latest Updates
The Nokia G22 is HMD Global’s first phone designed with repairability in mind. It aims to cut down on the frustration, expense and knowledge requirements of a cracked display or dead battery. To that end, it has partnered with the repair specialists at iFixit to produce free step-by-step guides and affordable replacement parts and tools.
Tech Spurt has been able to try out the new budget device, and says it’s well built with an impressively large 6.5-inch IPS screen (albeit one that does’t offer full HD resolution). However, he did notice that the 90Hz refresh rate is not ideal for fast motion, leading to a smearing effect in some apps and common stutters when scrolling.
It runs Android 12 on a Unisoc T606 CPU and a choice of 64GB or 128GB storage. It promises two years of OS updates and three of security patches, which should see it through to Android 14. The back cover is made from 100% recycled plastic and the packaging is FSC Mix certified.
